SHIFT INTERRUPTER SWITCH: what damage can it cause..??

Was told that the Shift Interrupter Switch on a 200hp 1995 Rude is sticking and should be changed. How can I make sure it is not something else?? If not changed, what kind of damage can it cause.?

    Thank you.

You will run on 3 cylinders. Quick check look at the stbd side of the power pack and look for 2 black/yellow wires connected outside of the pack and near the ground wires. Disconnect the plug and test it. If it needs to be replaced then, Look at the shift linkage on the motor. Follow the linkage down to the very bottom. Under the linkage you will see a plunger style switch mounted on a plastic mounting assembly. You need to separate the two plastic clips that retain the switch and slide it towards you. Route the cable along the motor to the power pack and make all connections.

Thank you for the reply. Once I disconnect the plug as mentioned, how is it tested.??

    Thanks.

Found the single black wire w/ yellow stripe. Disconnected and the engine shifted fine and did not cut out any more.

    Thank you for your help.

The switch might not be at fault. Most of the time you will find some stiffness in the cable or the shift linkage that makes the switch activate when it is not supposed to.

The problem with disconnecting is that when docking or trying to shift into neutral, it may be next to impossible to get it out of gear, especially if the idle rpm is higher than normal. You could hit a dock, another boat, or injure someone if that happens.

Just used the disconnecting to diagnose whether the problem was this or the shift rod/'o' ring being the problem. The shift switch will be changed before the engine is put to use again.

The shift rod was disconnected as well to test for stiffness.

    Thanks for the heads up.
