    Opinions on Direct TV.

I am thinking about switching over to Direct TV. I can get a 4 room HD setup with a dvr, local channels, nfl ticket and a $200 visa pre-paid card. $60 first year and $80 2nd year. Paying about $80 for cable.

What are some things to consider about the switch?

I have had them for 14 years and never had an issue. Just updraded to the Genie with whole home DVR and really like it. Make me mad to see what you are going to be paying since mine is much more than that but it is what it is!

I have had it 5 yrs now. I'm in the country. Comcast isn't worth a crap here.
Weather is a problem sometimes more so with satellite. Picture its r, stations are great.
Over all better than Comcast i had in the city.
Add 2 movie channels and you are up to 150.oo a month ..... That part sucks.

Of all the options out there I feel they are the best. They are expensive, but they all are ridiculous. I just pay it and go on. I really like the service and channel selection though.

I liked them for a while, but then had a HUGE customer service problem with them. Back to cable now.

What do the additional taxes typically run? I know this will be different in each area. Just trying to get some idea of the real total cost

60 bucks first year and 80 for the second year with those equipment upgrades translates into the lowest viewing package they have. By the time you get into a 2'nd or 3'rd tier package you will add 40 or more dollars into that price. You cant just say "I got directv" and not factor in the upgrade to additional programing and think its a good deal.

Five hours I sat by the river last night and not a single bite.

Finally, an insect repellent that actually works.

I had them for many years after dumping DISH. Bill was in the $140/mo rate and that was with three rooms and the DVR. I had an issue with a receiver after my "contract" expired even being with them for 8 or more years. They told me that a Tech would need to be sent out to fix the issue, I told them no, all I needed to do was run the diag package on the receiver. They told me nope $120.00/hr for him to come out. Next day ATT U-verse got installed. Now I have U-verse internet, programming, and house phone, for the same price as just programming from Direct. Boy they sure want me back. Call me about once a week, I get incentives in the mail with Visa gift cards etc. They should have thought about that when they told me the $120 technician fee.

Direct TV totally pissed me off yesterday. I've been with them since 1980. Their fee has constantly gone up. Last week I switched to Vision Cable for $45.00 a month, DVR, HD system. Free installation and equipment. I call Direct TV to cancel and was told I was a loyal customer, so why did I want to cancel. I told the nice lady they were to expensive. She said I could have the same service for $80.00 a month compaired to the $123.00 a month I was paying now. Why did they hammer me for years when it could of been alot less. Too late I said I already switch, locked in for $45.00 dollors first year and $55.00 after beat that. We can't sir send back your eccess card. I asked if they wanted back their box and dish, she says no just keep it. So now the box and dish is mine, so why have I been paying for them all these years since I own them now I ask. No answer just send us back the card. Sure glad I was a loyal customer.

Used to have DirectTV. One day my service went out. Called customer service...was told it should be back on in 15 minutes. Two hours later, called again. CS rep barely spoke English, and I sure don't speak Pashtu. Called four times, four different reps, one language that certainly wasn't MINE, and four different excuses. After two weeks of no service, I called back and..miracle of miracles...someone actually spoke American. Was told that DirectTV had accidentally fried my access card and one would be sent out shortly. Got it a week later, installed it, and dropped Direct the next day. Went with DISH and haven't had a single problem with their service. I still get mail from Direct at least once a week, which promptly goes in the shredder.

We have had Direct for 6-7 years it is VERY expensive. And if there is rain or any kind of storm in the area it goes out. We will switch back to Dish as soon we can.

I had Directv for the 4 years I lived in Alabama. It took them 2 years to get everything working right. After that it was okay, other than the signal loss you get with a steady rain. I paid right at $100 per month, after all the promo prices expired. I pay the same here back in Indiana for cable, with more programming. Not to mention, I can actually watch tv when it rains or snows...what a novel concept. As Jeff said, the price they quoted you is likely for some pretty basic service...best check that out.

I have had Direct TV from when it was primestar and no problems. I even have it in my camper for 5 bucks a month. If you call and ask for retention you will get a reduction on your bill.

I am looking at the choice package. Not interested in HBO, Cinenmax.....etc.... The package is pretty much the same programming I have with cable. Currently pay about $85 a month with cable and no dvr, hd in living room only and basic with the other 2 tvs.

I hate Direct, and their customer service is terrible. Dish is way better in my opinion. I actually prefer cable over Direct.

I am not a fan either and I will echo their CS sucks. In the 2 years I had it even though I never bought a Pay Per View or rented a movie from the on demand my bill was never the same amount. Ever. Had to call almost every month to get them to correct it. They also seemed to lose signal a LOT more than Dish. Funny thing was I thought we could not have 2 Dish accounts since we had Dish at home and Direct at our old place at lake. Called Direct even though it killed me to do it and they came out and their installer was a jerk. Bitched and whined about the trees and refused to install on the same pole the previous owner had their Direct on. No biggie. Called Dish and lo and behold I can have 2 accounts. They came out next day. Installed on the exact same pole and also took the time to bury the cable from pole into the house and gave us a killer price for the new programming. Had I of known that I would never have tried Direct anyway.

If you get Direct mention my account # 070161504 and we both get $100 in bill credits. Thanks!
