Sportsmaster Lower Unit -- Starting up motor out of the water

I searched the web and in bbc, I didn't find anything.

This year before I take the boat to the lake, I want to fire up my motor and burn all the left over gas from the winter and then put some new 93 non-oxy gas. Problem I'm running into is not finding any muffs/ears for the Sportsmaster so I could run it through a hose. Is my only option is to run it in a huge 30 gal bucket?

Don't feel bad. A lot of boats are slow.

You can run it in a bucket but make sure you fully submerge the gear house past the annodes. This keeps your water pump cool.

But they do make a flush kit for the sporty.

Thanks guys! I did a lot to the boat over the winter. I will have pictures up as soon as all these snow go away.

For 2 weeks, we had thawing temperatures with an early promising spring but as of yesterday, rain, sleet, 5 inches of snow has killed it.

I checked out bob's nose cone muff. Does it leak? Anyone used it before?

    IM sent

Unless they've changed them, the Bob's nosecone flush cups will NOT work with a sportmaster. The sportmaster's water pickups are quite a bit further back than those on a Bob's cone, and their flush cup doesn't extend far enough back to cover the pickups.

Eddie Marine has about the best price on a sportmaster compatible flush cup:

I made a "noodle" type flusher for my Titus cones sporty for about $5.

No offense to anyone...listen to Duane and call Don from European Marine. I bought a Mercury sportmaster muffs and they work perfectly. Very heavy duty and fit like a glove.

I also stock the flushers that Mercury has for the SportMaster units.
It will take forever to run even a few gallons of fuel out of your boat while at idle on a hose. I'm talking between 1 and 2 gals. per hr. You'd be better off removing the fuel line from your primer bulb, adding enough hose to the bulb to reach a gas can on the ground behind the boat and pump the primer bulb to start it to siphon out. Dump the fuel in your vehicle as it has knock sensors that will retard the timming if needed to burn the fuel with no problem.

Do not use the Bob's. Do not submerge into a barrell. Buy the Merc low water flush kit.

Lee, if you have one, I'll order one. It might take all day to burn 5-6 gallons worth but I like to fire it up, make sure everything is running well before taking her to the lake. I'll burn the rest running at WOT. Before storage last fall, I burned up all the gas and filled it with 93 oct, non-oxy and treated the fuel so I think i should be fine.

I have paypal, cc or check will do. IM me

I would splash some fresh gas in with what you have...just as an extra precaution.

Call up Jim Fergusen. He's the flusher king on Scream and Fly and makes the factory merc flushers for both the sporty and Cle. He sold mine direct for 46 bucks shipped. His number is (941) 955-5833 or (941) 266-4861.

If Mr. Ferguson is selling them for $46.00 delivered that's the way to go.
He's selling them cheaper than Mercury sells them to their Dealers. I'm sure Mercury appreciates that.

I believe some of the posts on scream and fly mentions that he makes them himself. The leather glove trick is something I've not thought of.

I think your right Duane Jim Furguson sell's his home made version.

Stick with the Merc brand from either Lee or Don.

Whip, Jim makes them for Mercury so he has zero mark up. He sells them to people in the know. He is really nice and sent mine in a hurry. It's the orange cup your going to get from Lee for 75 bucks or more.... Not trying to start a war just save someone a few dollars. Shane
